BLUEPRINT

Equity in education is a fundamental principle that every child deserves; equal access to quality learning opportunities. However, achieving true equity requires addressing systemic barriers that disproportionately affect communities of color, especially Black families. They encounter a myriad of challenges within the educational system, ranging from disparities in access to quality education, underrepresentation in advanced programs, to disproportionate disciplinary actions. Despite progress; Disciplinary disparities continue to persist in schools, with Black students subjected to harsher disciplinary measures such as suspensions and expulsions. Black students are often underrepresented in advanced placement (AP) courses, gifted programs, and other opportunities for academic enrichment.

One critical aspect of addressing systemic barriers is fostering meaningful family engagement within the public school system. By building strong partnerships between schools and Black families, we can work towards dismantling barriers and help to ensure equitable educational outcomes. Collaborative efforts between schools, families, community organizations, and policymakers are essential for identifying needs, implementing solutions, and advocating for systemic change. Empowering parents to actively participate in decision-making processes strengthens the educational ecosystem and ensures that the voices of Black families are heard and valued.

WATCH THE DOCUMENTARY

BLUEPRINT is a 3-part documentary that addresses these systemic inequities and sheds light on the critical role of family engagement and advancing equity in the public school system. It provides a BLUEPRINT for other communities of color in developing a multifaceted approach that involves collaboration among educators, families, and community stakeholders. It looks at the progression and journey of a non-profit organization entitled Excellent Options (XO) led by Black Parents in Loudoun County, Virginia to close the ”Opportunity Gap” and advocate for Equitable Family Engagement in their predominantly white school community.

BLUEPRINT can be used as a teaching tool for schools and communities of color to promote equitable family engagement practices. Practicing equitable family engagement requires an intentional, long-term effort to change ingrained perceptions and beliefs that school communities have of children and families of color.
